With 1,393 photos entered in THEDAILY's annual amateur photogaphy contest, judges had a tough time deciding five category winners.

That was especially true when it came to choosing a winner in the landscape category. They were stuck between Hartselle photographer Dawn Hastings' scenic Grand Canyon entry and Brenda Guy of Madison's shot of a grandiose staircase inside the Vatican. In the end, judges voted not to name a special moments category winner and instead award two landscape prizes.

Dawn Hastings was a co-winner in the landscape division with her Grand Canyon photo.

Andrea Wigington of Rogersville won in the child's category for a photo of her daughter dressed as a clown. Judges went to the birds in awarding the animal category prize. M.J. Montgomery's photo of a blue heron at Gulf Shores was the winner. In the humor division, Guy won for a photo of a pair of tennis shoes dangling from a hotel window in Europe.

The category winners join the four weekly winners in competing for the $500 grand prize. The winner will be named Sept. 4.
