Birmingham-Southern teacher killed

BIRMINGHAM (AP) — A man shot to death in the Smithfield area of Birmingham has been identified as 37-year-old Sammie Speigner III, an adjunct professor of sociology at Birmingham-Southern College.

A 1989 BSC graduate and Bessemer resident, Speigner was found lying on the ground in the 900 block of 10th Street North about 10 a.m. Thursday. A resident reported hearing gunfire.

Speigner had been shot in the side and his wallet was missing.

Police said he may have been shot inside a car, then dumped. Police detective Mike Allison said there were no immediate suspects. A carjacking is one of the possible motives.
