University student slain at home near USA campus

MOBILE (AP) — A 27-year-old University of South Alabama senior from Pascagoula, Miss., was found shot to death in his home near the Mobile campus.

The victim's missing car later was found, but there were no immediate arrests.

Police spokesman Cpl. Marcus Young said police discovered the body of Michael Gilly on Friday inside the university-owned rental house on Westhaven Drive South. Police went to the home after being contacted by a Gilly relative who had been unable to reach him.

A motive for the killing was unknown. Police located Gilly's 2003, silver Honda Accord in the Mobile Terrace area Friday night, about a mile from the victim's home.

Gilly worked at Grand Casino in Biloxi while pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. A casino spokeswoman says Gilly worked in the table games.
