A violent knife fight at a Moulton apartment complex put one man in critical condition, while another needed 48 stitches on his torso, and a third got stitches to cuts on his neck, arms and hands.
Moulton Police Chief Lyndon McWhorter said Joe Wolfford, 20, of Old Hillsboro Road in Moulton went to the residence of Royce Dewan Terry on Monday at about 1 a.m. at the Almond Ridge Apartments.
McWhorter said Wolfford allegedly cut Terry with a box cutter and chased him outside, where the two continued the fight. He said Jason Wiley was sleeping in one of the apartment's bedrooms, heard the commotion and went to Terry's aid.
McWhorter said Wiley didn't see the cutter when he went to separate the two men.
"While Wiley and Wolfford were struggling, Terry got to his pocket knife and stabbed Wolfford," McWhorter said.
McWhorter said a medical helicopter carried Wolfford to Huntsville Hospital with a cut throat. He said he was first listed in critical condition.
He since has been upgraded to stable condition.
The chief said Wiley received 48 stitches in his upper chest and back, while Terry had a cut to his throat and numerous cuts to his arms and hands. Lawrence County Medical Center treated and released Terry and Wiley.
McWhorter said his department is still investigating the case and trying to determine the cause or motive for the incident.
"There will be charges in this case," he said.
