Decatur jeweler new member of state Senior Services board

MONTGOMERY — A Decatur jeweler who began delivering Meals On Wheels when he was barely out of high school is a newly appointed member of the state Senior Services board of directors.

Jimmy Ray Smith said he has always been sympathetic to the needs of senior citizens.

Smith began delivering Meals On Wheels in Decatur in the 1980s. Now owner of Jimmy Smith Jewelers, Smith said his interest in the program led to fundraising for Meals On Wheels, service on its local board and work with the Community Action Agency.

Gov. Bob Riley appointed Smith, who will serve on the Senior Services board through 2011.

He sees his role with the state board as advisory, but said he hopes to raise public awareness of senior needs.
