Pirate Day returns to Point Mallard By Paul Huggins A sword swallower, hidden treasure, a talking parrot and a cannon ball splash contest will be part of Pirate Day on Saturday at Point Mallard. Dan Meyer, also known as Cap'n Cutless, will display his sword swallowing feats at 3 p.m. at the J. Gilmer Blackburn Aquatic Center. Before and after his show, attendees can visit with Meyer's blue and gold macaw parrot. Other activities from 1 to 4 p.m. include a buried treasure hunt, cannonball splash contest and relay races. The first 100 children through the gates receive a free pirate eye patch. Meyer, a Hartselle resident, performed as a circus clown, juggler, stilt-walker and fire-eater before taking up sword swallowing in 1998. He describes himself as a "Christian David Copperfield" who combines real feats with a powerful message instead of tricks and illusions. He eats fire and swallows solid steel swords, blades, sabers, bayonets, rapiers, cutlasses and other objects from 15 to 30 inches in length, and up to eight swords at once. Meyer is a two-time Guinness World Record holder for sword swallowing, including being the first person to swallow a sword under water. Park opens The water park opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. Admission: $15, adult 12 and older; children 5 to 11, $10; children 4 and under, free.
