5 area players finalists for Mr., Miss Basketball

From Staff, Wire Reports

Five players with local ties made the list of finalists for the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball awards.

The boys list includes 6-foot-1 Austin High guard Tyler Holloway, 6-9 Athens center Richard Hendrix, 6-3 Hatton guard Jesse Rutherford and 6-2 R.A. Hubbard guard Michael Ricks. The girls list includes 5-11 Hatton center Amber Rutherford.

The Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball awards go to the ASWA's choices as Alabama's prep basketball players of the year.

A total of 42 players, 21 boys and 21 girls, are finalists for the awards. The winners will be announced at a banquet following the Final Four state tournament in March. A date has not been determined.

Three boys and three girls in each of the state's six classifications and three each from the Alabama Independent School Association were selected as finalists by a panel of 15 ASWA member sportswriters, who met in Montgomery on Thursday to make the selections.

Following the completion of the state tournament, the committee will select a boy and girl as player of the year in each class and the overall Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball winners.

Ronald Steele of John Carroll Catholic, a freshman at Alabama, was named Mr. Basketball in 2003 and 2004. Starr Orr of Speake, a freshman at Middle Tennessee State, was named Miss Basketball in 2004.

Ricks averages 18 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists a game for 1A R.A. Hubbard. Jesse Rutherford scored 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds a game, while Amber Rutherford averaged 31.2 points and 19.6 rebounds.
