Seven from area qualify for State Am

Three area golfers shot even-par rounds of 72 during State Amateur qualifying at Burningtree on Monday. They led a group of 24 golfers who qualified to play in next month's event.

Athens' Wesley Coleman and Decatur's Dale Porter and Michael Daniels made up the trio. Four others from the area also qualified at Burningtree's 7,001-yard layout. Decatur's Mac Crane (73), Athens' Greg Anderson (76) and Decatur's William Dunnivant (77) and Matthew Gourgeot (77) also qualified from the 69-player field.

Rand Mullins of Hampton Cove, James Smith of Huntsville and Bryant West of Red Bay joined Crane at 73. Will McCurdy of Fort Payne, Wes Carter of Hoover and Chris Robertson of Huntsville each shot 75.

Hartselle's Ray Halbrooks (79), Athens' Blair Whitt (80), Decatur's Pierre Coggins (81), Decatur's Jim Kent (81), Athens' Mike Williams (81) and Decatur's Andy Villarreal (82) failed to qualify.

The 90th State Amateur will be June 8-11 at NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa.

Qualifying was also held Monday at Selma Country Club and Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa.

Two other qualifying events, at Steelwood in Loxley and Chace Lake in Hoover, will take place later this month.

Will Swift of Hoover shot 9-under par to win last year's event at Limestone Springs in Oneonta. Decatur's Justin Roberts was the co-leader through two rounds and finished in a tie for seventh.
