Hartselle strikes quickly to advance
Lady Tigers score 4 times after restarting game to eliminate Buckhorn

Hartselle High scored four runs in three innings Thursday at Buckhorn to claim a 5-1 win in the second game of a Class 5A softball sub-state series.

Thursday's win, coupled with Hartselle's 8-1 win Tuesday, sent the Lady Tigers (37-18) into a Saturday home best-of-three series with Boaz, starting at 3 p.m. The winner goes to the state tournament next week at Montgomery's Lagoon Park.

Thursday's game was the completion of a suspended game. Buckhorn and Hartselle were tied 1-1 in the fifth inning Tuesday before rain forced the teams off the field.

Mary Curtis pitched a complete game for Hartselle, allowing five hits and one run.

Shanice Johnson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Audrey McClanahan was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple, and Lindsay Robinson was 1-for-2 with a double.

Class 4A

  • Ardmore 10, Madison County 1:Casey Steadman supported a strong hitting effort by Ardmore, limiting Madison County to five hits and one run.

    The Lady Tigers scored once in the first inning, five times in the third, three times in the fourth and once in the seventh.

    Melissa Sharp scored the first run in the opening inning to put Ardmore ahead for good. Sharp finished with a single and a triple.

    Shannon Fogg added two singles and an RBI, and Jara Norton pitched in two singles and an RBI.

    In the next round, Ardmore will face Central-Florence on Saturday in a best-of-three series. The games are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

    Class 2A

  • Sylvania 8-6, Priceville 0-0: Two days after it beat Sylvania 2-1 in 10 innings in the series opener, Priceville couldn't muster the same performance Thursday.

    The losses ended Priceville's season at 30-15.

    Class 1A

  • Speake 11, Section 3: Speake advanced to a Saturday sub-state second-round series with its win at Section. The Lady Bobcats split a pair with Section on Tuesday before rain halted play.

    Speake hosts last year's 1A champ, Waterloo, for a best-of-three series on Saturday at 1 p.m.

    Revia Brown, Whitney Sparks, Kylie Black, Paige Atkins and Ally Cummings each had two hits for Speake (33-16).

    All but Cummings had both a double and a single. Cummings had two singles. Brown, Black and Cummings each drove in two runs.

    Kayla Black was 1-for-4 with a single.
